DemaRock D175 Breaker Repair: Diagnosing the Problem and Preventing Future Damage

At DemaRock, every repair is an opportunity to help our customers get the most out of their equipment. Recently, our service team inspected and repaired a DemaRock D175 hydraulic breaker that arrived with an oil leak.
The Diagnosis
After a thorough inspection, our technicians confirmed some good news: the breaker had no internal hydraulic leakage.
The oil leak was traced to damaged external hose fittings. Repairing those fittings got the breaker back into working condition without any major internal component replacement.
Looking Beyond the Leak
While the hydraulic system was in excellent condition internally, our technicians identified excessive wear on the breaker tool.
Excessive Tool Mushrooming
The tool had experienced significant mushrooming at the tip, indicating prolonged hammering in one location. This type of wear is typically caused by incorrect operating technique and can lead to:
- Excessive heat buildup
- Premature tool wear
- Increased stress on the breaker
- Reduced overall service life
Continuing to hammer in the same location for too long accelerates wear on both the tool and the breaker, and can eventually lead to costly repairs and unnecessary downtime.
Best Practices for Longer Breaker Life
To maximize breaker performance and service life, we recommend the following:
- Limit hammering to approximately 15 seconds in one location. If the material hasn't broken, reposition and try another point rather than continuing to hammer in the same place.
- Work from the outside in. When breaking hard material, allow the rock or concrete room to fracture naturally.
- Regularly inspect and re-torque mounting bolts and retaining hardware. This is especially important on larger breakers like the D175, which generate significant vibration during operation.
Following these simple operating practices helps reduce wear, improve productivity, and extend the life of your equipment.
What Proper Tool Wear Looks Like

Example of normal tool wear, for comparison with the damaged tool pictured above.
A properly operated tool maintains its original profile and does not develop the excessive mushrooming seen on the damaged D175 tool. Regular inspections can help identify unusual wear before it leads to further damage.
